MSA 2040 SMU Setup for VMWare

$

Hi all,

I just wanted some advice on the new SMU (v3) for configuring the MSA 2040 for VMware. I've been so used to using the old SMU (I think it's version 2) for setting up HP SANs that the new version has taken me by surprise a little. I also wanted to utilise Virtual Disks, which I've heard is better for VMware (?), configuring the MSA via SMU v2 only allows for the creation of Linear Disks.

So my method for configuring the MSA with SMU v2 goes something like this:

1. Create the VDisk

2. Create the Volumes - When creating volumes, it allows you to map the iSCSI ports and also assign a LUN and read/write access

3. Add Hosts (ESX Servers) - Enter the ESX server IQN's and that should be all the config done.

However, using SMU v3 I'm a little lost... I've created a DiskPool (similar to creating a VDisk). I've created the volumes but this is where I am getting confused. When I create the volumes there is no option to map iSCSI ports, assign LUN's or configure read/write access.

And then, when I go to Hosts, "Add to Host" (which I am presuming is the same as Add Host) is greyed out.

Could anyone give me some advice on what steps I need to carry out that will allow me to do what I've done using SMU v2 but on SMU v3? Is there a process I must follow? Where/how do I configure iSCSI port mapping, assign LUN's and configure read/write access? Also how do I go about adding a Host?

Under the Hosts section there is a "Create Initiator" option, what's all this about? Any advice would be great and some step-by-step instructions would be fantastic.

MSA2052 Best Practise placement for 10 disks

Hi guys,

I'm relatively new into using MSA devices and I have a general question.  I've purchased a MSA2052 with 10 1.8TB 10K SAS disks.

Is there a  best practise about placing the disks into the drive bays or simply start from bay 1 to 10?

Many thanks!

Just upgraded all disks, can’t expand volume MSA 1040

Hello,

I have an MSA 1040 running RAID6 configuration.  Have two 12 disk volumes using 300GB SAS drives. .  On one of the volumes, I replaced all 12 of its drives one at a time with 1.2 TB drives allowing them to rebuild each time.  After completing the 12th drive and letting it rebuild, I see no way to expand that volume or create another with the slack space.

In the configuration it is showing all that additional space ~14TB is now "reserved."

An additional finding is when I do choose "Modify Disk Group" and then pick that volume.  Then I put a check mark in the Expand? Box, it says 11.9TB is available and will result in Total Space of 14.4TB.  But the Modify button remains grayed out.

What can I do to reclaim this space and expand the volume or create another volume?  Thank you.

Remote snap replication between 2 msa 2040 via FC network

Hi

I have 2 msa 2040 for  installing remote snap software. I want to set up local and remote sites connections via 4 fiber cable by san switch. but one of these storages is near the switch and other one is  in place with 50 meters distance from the switch.

If I connect remote storage to switch with 4 * 50 meters LC-LC cable , Are  Linear replications doing run correctly?

do san storage sfp (C8R23A) and san switch sfp (AJ716B) support this distance?

Thank you

Implementation of a replication method between MSA 2050 and MSA 1050

Hello,

I have a video storage project.

For that, I have been provided with the following hardware :

  • Proliant DL360 Gen9 Server (Windows 2016 Server with video application)
  • MSA 2050 (11 * 8TB)
  • MSA 1050 (10 * 8TB)

The hardware was purchased without full validation of the requirement.

Today, I have been asked a data replication between the MSA 2050 and the MSA 1050 (if possible realtime replication (synchronous)) but I confess I don't know much about these materials.

The goal would be to have a volume attached to the windows Server and replicate this volume.

My idea would be to have a RAID5+1 volume on the MSA 2050 replicated with a RAID5 volume on the MSA 1050.

About the cabling, currently :

  • Port SAS 1 - controller A - MSA 2050 connected to HPE H241 Smart HBA card
  • Port SAS 1 - controller B - MSA 2050 connected to HPE H241 Smart HBA card
  • Cable SAS - controller A - MSA 2050 connected to PORT IN – MSA 1050
  • Cable SAS - controller B - MSA 2050 connected to PORT IN – MSA 1050

According to my research, it seems to have several methods of replication (snapshots,…) and I'm a bit lost. I confess that I don't know the hardware.

2 questions :

  • What do you think would be the best replication method to implement ?
  • Is the cabling I made good ?

Thank you very much for your advice !

Best regards,

MSA 2052 Upgrade from SSD Cache to Performance Tier

$

Hi all,

I have MSA2052 and on Pool A I have one disk group with SAS 10 K drives and two SAS SSDs as Read Cache.

Now I buy 4 more SSDs and I want to build performance tier.

Because this MSA is already in production environment and I don't have different array to move all data from MSA.

So, I want to be sure everything will go according a plan.

Step one: Install license from https://myenterpriselicense.hpe.com/

Step two: Remove disk group with Read-Cache SSDs

Step three: Create new disk group RAID 5 from five SSDs and sixth use as global spare.

I am not sure about removing disk group with SSDs. Is there any danger of data loss?

I would like to hear from you some guideline or where can be problems.

And if it’s possible to do it when all servers will use the MSA without interruption.

Of course, I will have a backup.

Thank you.

Regards,

David.

MSA2040 installing new disks

We have a MSA2040 with 14 disks installed at the moment. We need to expand with more storage and have purchased 4x new drives which will be a new raid.

The SAN hasn't been updated since sometimes in 2016 (GL220P009).

Do I have to upgrade the firmware before installing the disks?

I tried to download the latest firmware but was promted to link a valid waranty or support so I'm not sure if we only got 3 year care pack or if we got the 5 year one.

Expand virtual volume - free pool / disk group space - MSA 1050

$

Hi all,

I've been searching for an answer here and there but didn't find a question close enough to my problem and poor understanding of the subject.

I am looking to expand a virtual volume fromt about 350GB to 2.1TB.
Allthough it looks quite straightforward, something about the free space available is not quite clear.

Here is an overview of the current situation  ( currently I cannot add images yet):
Pool B sates 51 GB free, of which 7106 GB unallocated, divided over 2 disk groups.
Each fisk group has 3580 GB free.

I have a virtual volume of 350 GB which I would like to increase to 2.1TB.
I was thinking, there is 7TB free (read unallocated), so that should be ok.

But then I found this in the MSA 1050/2050 SMU reference guide:

Optional: In the Expand By field, enter the size by which to expand the volume. If overcommitting the physical capacity of the system is not allowed, the value cannot exceed the amount of free space in the storage pool.

and since it was not so clear what 'unallocated' meant, I found this:

Unallocated space is space that is designated for a pool but has not yet been allocated by a volume within that pool.

Does this mean that I cannot extend the virtual volume because there is only 51GB left in the pool?
Or if I do so, it would mean that I am overcomissioning space?
Meaning, I will take space that is initally allocated to other volumes ( but not used yet aka free space in the different volumes).
This would also mean that if my extended volume gets full, some other volumes will lack space at some point in time?

Thanks in advance for clarifying and helping me out.
Kind regards.

MSA 2052 & Vsphere 6.7 - discrepancy free space

$

Hi Community,

I'm looking at the available storage capacity in Vsphere and comparing it with the actually used space on the MSA 2052 Pool.
The whole Pool of the MSA is used as a VMFS6 volume by vsphere.

All vdisks in all VMs are Thick Proivisioned eager zeroed.
I have 6.54TB in total and 5.99TB used. So I have 566GB free.

If I check the MSA I can see 6.54TB in total but 2.16TB is avaiable unallocated.

I do understand the the discepancy.
Vsphere reports used space based on the used vdissk which are thick provisioned.
MSA reports way more unallocated space because it's a virtual Array and data has not been written yet.

My question now is what happens if I use up the remaining 0.5TB in vsphere and vsphere tells me I need more space. The MSA Pool propably will still have 2TB left of unallocated space.
How can I utilize the thin provisiond virtual array of MSA so I don't have to buy new disks?

Best practice for thin provisioned virtual storage array used in vsphere is to use Thick provisioned vdisk for the VM. Right? But how can I now utilze this inside vsphere?

Am I missing a feature on MSA or vpshere side?
Am I understanding something the wrong way?

I just don't think it makes sense to buy new drives if I haven't reached a certain threshold only because vsphere doesn't "see" the unallocated space on the MSA.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,
Andy

MSA1050 - Delete Disk Group

$

Hi,

I have a MSA 1050 with VE100R002 firmware configured as below:
- Pool A -> DiskGroup1 -> 4 x 300GB 10K SAS RAID5
- Pool A -> DiskGroup2 -> 3 x 300GB 10K SAS RAID5
- Global Spare -> 1 x 300GB 10K SAS

There are 4 LUNs exposed to the hosts.

I want to make a backup of the data and delete 3 LUNs, coming to occupy only 500GB. At this point, could I delete the DiskGroup2?
Do I risk losing the data on the remaining 500GB?
I would like to delete DiskGroup2 in order to recreate a new Virtual Disk Group with 9 disks in RAID5.

Thank you a lot
Paolo

Disk Performance Statistics non-media errors

$

Hello,

I have a question about the MSA 2040 GL225P002-02 Disk Performance Statistics.

Initially I was worried, because the CLI-Command: "# show disk-statistics all historical 5.5"

Shows many Disk Errors periodically for almost all my disks. Same also when showing the Historical Performance Data in the SMUv3 on all my Disk Groups:Capture.PNG

Then I found: https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=a00064852en_us&docLocale=en_US

Where it says that these Errors can be normal.

I then wanted to try the suggestion from the Resolution section:

"Resolution:

The CLI output includes a chart that separates the non-media (NMED)errors from any physical errors."

But I was never able to get the separate data/chart for non-media and physical errors from the CLI?

Because I had many disk failures recently, I am a little worried. Can you help me getting this data?

Hello,

I have a MSA 2040 SAN with dual controllers. I just put in 4 new drives and wanted to install them.

I tried to create a new Disk Group as RAID-5 but I get the following message:

Hi,

I'm planning on setting up a HP 2052 with automatic tiering enabled. I have a couple of question I hope someone could answer:

1) Using two SSD drive in RAID1 for the performance tier, if a single SSD fails and the Health  of the disk group effected would the SAN disable this as a performance Tier and move the data to the Standard tier (to maintain data integrity)?

2) IIs it possible to disable the performance tier in the event of a failed disk in the RAID1 SSD group?

Thanks in advance for your help

MSA 2052 configuration sanity check

$

I'm looking to replace an aging P2000 G3 SAS with a MSA 2052 SAS.  The P2000 has a wild mix of drives assembled over 10 years in 24 SFF + 25 SFF add-on shelf.  It's been flawless.  Never a support issue.  Rarely a drive failure even though many of the drives have been refurbs.

For the 2052 I'm looking at adding 3 x 800GB SDD + 17 2.4TB HDD to have two identical volumns of with auto-tiering:

  • 2 x 800GB SSD RAID 1 (Performance tier)
  • 8 x 2.4TB HDD RAID6 (Other tier)

And 1 spare of each type.

Does this sound Ok?  Any compelling reason to go 8 x 2.4TB RAID10?  Total capacity isn't critical, nor is performance as 800GB RAID1 x 2 is enough to handle all of the hot data in the systems (10-15 VMs).

Is there sufficient risk of a failure during a RAID6 rebuild of a 8x2.4TB array to make avoiding it worth considering?
