Trying to reinstall a cluster node - indistinguishable disks found

I've inherited a Windows 2016 Server failover cluster, and one node was causing problems (with DISM, and with weird behaviour including failing to live migrate). So I have reinstalled Windows and added Failover Cluster Manager, MPIO and Hyper-V.

The cluster storage (SAS MSA20400) connects, but it identifies several disks and says that two cannot be distinguished. These are 2 and 5, which are clustered disks in the MSA... Is there an HP driver that should be added? The MPIO utility is not identifying the MSA manufacturer and part number, which I guess might be part of the problem.

Again, I have never done this sort of work on the cluster and it's in production so I am treading very carefully.Annotation 2020-08-25 125536.pngAnnotation 2020-08-25 125351.pngAnnotation 2020-08-25 125918.png

HPE MSA 2052

Hi,

I'm planning on setting up a HPE 2052 with automatic tiering enabled. I have a couple of question I hope someone could answer:

1) Using two SSD drive in RAID1 for the performance tier, if a single SSD fails and the Health  of the disk group effected would the SAN disable this as a performance Tier and move the data to the Standard tier (to maintain data integrity)?

2) IIs it possible to disable the performance tier in the event of a failed disk in the RAID1 SSD group?

Thanks in advance for your help

Incorrect Data Queue Depth Statistics

Hi all,

We deployed several  small MSA configurations (for a dedicated critical application) for a customer:  Two disk groups (4 x SSDs) are used , one per pool. Firmware vesion is VL270P003-01.

Looking the performance at different levels (from pool to disk), we observed peak of IOs  (not linked to the application) and impressive Queue Depth (the graph showed a curve about 8 000 000!!!).

We decided to disable the backgroup disk-groups and disk jobs scrub and to reset all statistics (because disk no more belonging to a disk group was reporting with I/Os).

Now I/Os at disk level seems normal (no more peak at 2000/3000 IOs due to scrub job) but the QueueDepth is curious : for some disks, we have about 100 (for me it is high regarding application activity and usage of SSD) and for other we continue to have 8000000. Confidence with performance reporting is low.

With CLI, it is not possible to have live QueueDepth while with SMU a QueueDepth is reporting (in live performance area) and  the number shows seems correct (<3 and often = 0).

Do you experiment same issues with QueueDepth reports?

MSA2050 ISCSi connection to Virtual connect

Hello

I have a new MSA 2050 (ISCSI Only controllers) and want to connect directly to the the two Virtual connect exist in the c7000 Blade chassis.

I want to Mapp Iscsi LUN from That MSA 2050 device to specific VM (Veeam).

My questions:

What is the best practise for Physical connectivity?

for example each virtual connect have two cables , each cable is directly connected to one port on one of the storage controller?

Do I have to configure the two cables from the same virtual connect as Link aggregated for high availability and better performence. how to do that Link aggregation?

Which type of connection to use Fabric or ethernet?

After adding the connection to the Virtual connect , Do Ihave to enter every server profile and add this new connection?

Thanks

Advice on adding more disk to MSA 2052

Hi,
just wanting to confirm some potential expansion plans for adding addtional storage to an MSA2052 system. Currently the MSA has 2 virtual pools A and B.

Pool A contains the following

Slots 1-4 / 4x1.6tb ssd (raid 5)
Slots 11-14 / 4x1.8tb sas (raid 5)

Pool B contains the following

Slots 5-8 / 4x1.6tb ssd (raid 5)
Slots 15-18 / 4x1.8tb sas (raid 5)

There is also a hot spare SAS drive in slot 19 for the 1.8tb drives
There are also two unused 800GB SSD drives in slot 9 and 10. (believe these ship with the bare system but have never been used).

Customer needs to expand useable space due to growth. As cost is an issue the plan is the following.

1. Remove the 800gb SSD drives. (slots 9 and 10)
2. Move hot spare from slot 19 to slot 10. (assume we just need to unmark the drive as a spare in the gui first and then mark it again once moved).
3. Add a NEW 1.6tb ssd hot spare into slot 9 (vacated in step 1).
4. Create two new disk groups the empty slots from 19-24

3x1.6tb SSD / Raid 5 (slots 19-21)
3x1.8tb SAS / Raid 5 (slots 22-24)

Add these two new groups to either pool A or B to extend the available storage.

Whilst I appreciate these are 2+1 rather than 3+1 raid this seems like the best compromise to give the customer more space without adding enclosures.

Can you advise if there are any issues with doing this other than a potential difference in performance between them (more likely I guess for the SAS tier).

Currently all the volumes are set for performance mode anyway meaning the majority of hot data is kept on SSD.

Any advice or issues you can see please let me know.

( did actually ask this question via support but after 11 days there's still no response hence posting here)

thanks

MSA 2040 Failure

Hi all,

I have a failed MSA2040 (both controllers have been burnt/damaged).

There does not seem to be any physcially amage to the disks and was wondering if anyone knew of the correct process to setup the disks in a replacement MSA 2040.

Is it as simple as placing the disks in the new MSA, will the original configuration be rebuilty from the disks?

Thanks

Hello all. I've updated the FW on my MSA 1040 Storage. I installed the GL225P002-02-HP version and After the update, I cant see all information through GUI Interface. Even I can't choose between older and newer GUI versions. The physical, Vdisks, Hosts information is not shown when I click on it.I've tried with 3 different FW versions with the same behavior.

Some experience with this issue?

Thanks!

Replication Volume error

Hi

I have 2 hp msa2040 with firmware version GL210R004 that should be replicated with each other.
these two storages have connected with 4 fiber cable by a san switch.

I have 10 Volumes on first msa2040 and there are enough disk-group spaces on second msa2040 without any volume.
when I do Replicate Volume, I select "Create new volume on vdisk" for creating secondary volumes

I did replication set on these volumes, some of them replicated correct but some of them made a mistake like bottom photo.
then replication not done but secondary volume and snap pool are created on second msa
the volumes with mistake  are completely similar to correct volumes.

could you please help me what should I do?
thanks

MSA 2040 disk compatible

Hi.
In our office, we are using SAN MSA 2040.
To service this device, we periodically buy HDDs to replace those that have failed.
It turned out that one of the hard drives was bought incorrectly by mistake - 872738 instead of 787649.
The supplier refuses to make a replacement because about six months have passed since the purchase.
However, both chassis have drives of the same model (EG001800JWJNR).
Could I use a new drive to installing it in chassis 787649?
Will they be compatible and possibly not cause conflicts at the firmware level?
Best regard, Dmitry.

Dear Subjith,

San switch (SAN MSA 2050) not accessible from browser and not able to update license received from HP. Could not login via browser. Login is possible via cli , but license cannot be updated via cli since it is not just a key but an xml file.

P2000 G3 FC MSA Unable to create Vdisk with Sata SSD's

So i got myself a P2000 G3 FC and trying to get it work.

I added 4 128GB Sata SSD's in it and it detect them corect and creating a vdisk with NRAID works just fine.

But when i try to create a RAID 5 array with those SSD's i get a error :

Unable to create Vdisk vd01.
An invalid device was specified. () -

When i try to create a RAID 5 with 4 SAS HDD's it works just fine.

Is there a way to get it work, or is RAID not supported on Sata disks ?

Volume Affinity

If I have one disk group of SSD, pool A, and enough SAS drives to create 6 disk groups split across pool A and pool B. How can I create a volume that lives only on SSD disk group? Would I have to move all SAS disk groups to pool B and specify pool A and affinity = performance?

Hi

we have an MSA 1040 SAS with 2 DGs , one made of 15x600GB drive and one with 9x1TB disk drives

As the 1040 is full and we are expecting an increasing of space demand we'd like to know if ,and how , we can "shrink" the 600GB DG by removing one drive at time and swap it with new 1TB drives to be added to the other DG

Good day MSA Community!  We are happy to announce that the MSA Firmware website has been updated and now supports the new MSA 1060/206x controllers, enclosures, and drives.  Remember this site is a one-stop-shop for all MSA Firmware.  In case you don't already have it bookmarked, here is the link:  www.hpe.com/storage/MSAFirmware.

Remember you can upload your MSA log file to the MSA Health Check and it will perform a complete firmware inventory and recommend any needed firmware updates.

Cheers!
/Kipp
