MSA2050 disk transfer rate

$

I have MSA2050 and 12G drives however SMU shows transfer rate 6.0. Is this normal?

If I hower on the chassis it shows midplane model 2U24-6Gv2. Having 12G drives are definitely more costly so I wonder if there is any benefit if midplane can support only 6G?

Kind Regards, Matt

HPE MSA 2052 DRS

I have recently configured HPE MSA 2052 to use with Vmware vSphere 7.0 and came across below while reading best MSA 2052 practices guide.

Question: Do i have to configure anything in MSA 2052 to harness the benefit of DRS and I/O balancing provided by MSA storage array controller, or it is something happening by defaut.

Does it mean it is a subsiture for VMware DRS feature found in its enterprise licence offering?

Quote

Distributed Resource Scheduler
VMware vCenter Datastore Clusters provide a feature called Storage Distributed Resource Scheduler (SDRS) with I/O load balancing. The intent of this feature is to balance and distribute VM storage needs across traditional physical disk based LUNs.
Because the MSA Storage Array controller and virtual volumes provide the benefits of DRS and I/O balancing dynamically, the VMware’s DRS and I/O load balancing are not needed with virtual volumes as long as all hosts in the cluster share the same MSA volume mappings.
Best practice: In the vCenter administration tools, do not enable DRS and I/O load balancing on data storage clusters that are solely based on MSA Virtual Volumes.

Hi,

I'm going to buy a new MSA 1050 for another customer. MSA 1050 Option parts include only SAS drives larger than 600GB and SSDs larger than 800GB. Is it possible to have the complete drives list compatible with MSA1050, including 400GB SSD?
Thanks a lot

Disk group SSD

Hi there,

May I ask a question please?

I use the MSA 2052. I have the an issues about the SSD storage.

If I use the SSD make RCHA blockade Is it still okay or not or the data will be loss?

I'm not sure that why we should create disk 2 group and make RCHA blockade?

Is it possible if we create the SSD as another group and assigned disk group SSD as RCHA?

However, I'm new with the MSA 2052. Could you please advice me or guide to me?

I appreciate your support.

Disk Scrub

I'm having MSA 2052 with two disk groups. One having 3 nos SSD hard disk and second with 13 nos SAS hard disks. While the disk group with SSD hard disk has an automated disc scrub configured and running properly as per the logs.

I have uploaded the MSA logs to https://msa.ext.hpe.com/MSALogUploader.aspx  to get detailed health analysis and recommendations. One of the recommendation is the disk scrub was not enabled. I know the disk scrub is running on the SSD group.

Question 1. Is it necessary to enable disk scrub for SAS hard disk and if yes, how do I enable the feature. Or is this disk scrub feature only for global spare hard disk. How do I ensure the disk scrub is enabled for the SSD hard disk even though I can see it in the the logs it is running well.

Question 2. During my initial disk selection and confuguration during the RAID on hard disk group, I have not thought of keep a global spare hard disk. Can I just buy a hard disk (SSD + SAS) and plug it as Global Har Disk without breaking or need to reconfigure the raid/array.

Question 3. If I'm not mistaken, I had ready online that there might be a feature or third party feature of some anti ransomware feature on MSA 2052. I'm not sure. But is there any recommendation for such feature for storage? Apologies if I got this wrong or likely mixed my read with storage.

For Best Application performance - HPE had published a list of applications and the RAID level / Read-ahead Cache Size / Cache Write Optimization for the MSA 2050/2052 Storage Arrays. For those not aware, the following list is a great guideline to configure the MSA Array depending on the application workloads.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

* Adaptive read-ahead caching : This option enables adaptive read ahead, which allows the MSA controller to dynamically calculate the optimum read-ahead size for the current workload

* Stripe read-ahead caching : This option sets the read-ahead size to one stripe. The MSA controllers treat non-RAID and RAID 1 disk groups internally as if they have a stripe size of 512 KB, even though they are not striped.

MSA SNMPv3 traps and Insight Remote Support

Hello,

In the context of HPE Experts Day, I wanted to see if there's anyone who can shed a light on the following.
In our environement we use Insight Remote Support (ver. 7.9) for monitoring of MSA (2040/2052) arrays and SAN switches.
Due to security measures we're pushed to switch over to only secure protocols (i.g. https intead of http or SNMPv3 instead of SNMPv1). Monitoring of SAN Switches is now configured to use SNMPv3 traps, however the MSA arrays are not able to communicate with Insight Remote Support using SNMPv3 traps.

Insight Remote Support only accepts traps on port 1162, while MSA SNMPv3 traps are default sent over port 162.
Is there any way to get this working?

Thank you.
Dardan

We have problem to add storage to ESX OS, i see my volume on ESX Storage devices with LUN, but if i try add storage to ESX have error Call "HostDatastoreSystem.CreateVmfsDatastore" for object "ha-datastoresystem" on ESXi  failed.

Please help, any idea?

MSA 2052 Disk Quarantine

I've got an client with an MSA 2052, they initially had a SAS model and the disks were installed and configured into disk groups and pools. Before any data was loaded or the SAN plan into production, they realized they needed iSCSI and had it replaced. The disks were swapped as is but there must have been some change as now the Pool is in Fault and of the three disk groups, one is healthy FTOL, the other two are Quarantined QTOF.  I wish to delete everything and start fresh but I'm hitting a roadblock.

My three disk groups are:

dgA01 - QTOF

dgA02 - FTOL

dgA03 - QTOF

Trying to remove either of the QTOF groups, I get: Error: The operation failed because the disk group is quarantined.

Trying to run dequarantine I get: Error: The requested operation cannot be completed because the target disk group is an internal component.

Trying to remove the FTOL group I get: Error: The requested operation can not be completed because the virtual pool is unheathly.

And trying to remove the pool fails with: Error: the operation failed because the disk group is quarantined.

How can I delete these quarantined groups? As a note, this device is a few hundred KM away so I have no physical access to it.

Hi,

I am looking for a step-by-step guide that describes: How to Add Windows Server (2016 or 2019) Hosts on HPE MSA 2050.
Configuration required on MSA and Windows Server (step by step).

I am lost with following guides, I just need specific information above: (so please do not suggest the same articles again).

Built in encryption of the 2050 with Advanced Data Services license option.

Hi all

I have some questions about the encryption feature of the 2050, which is not available in the 2052.

1. If an Advanced Data Services license is added to the 2050, is the encryption functionality retained?

2. Besides encryption, is there any functional or performance difference between a 2050 with Advanced Data Services and a 2052?

3. Is the encryption of the 2050 assisted by a dedicated processor or is it purely software?

Cheers,

Gordon

HPE MSA Storage Configuration and Best Practices for VMware vSphere

$

Hi

I've been reading the above Best Practice guide, but it's dated August 2017 Rev 2.

Is there anything newer than this relating to VSphere?

Im just a little unsure about page 25 where it says:

"VMware vSphere® VMFS datastores on multiple Virtual Volumes on the same Virtual Disk Group can have an adverse effect on overall system performance of the vSphere cluster. Using the above recommended configuration of a single Virtual Volume for each Storage Pool with a Virtual Disk Group aligned with the Power of 2 Model will maximize performance and capacity."

So is this basically meaning  1 VMFS datastore : 1 Virtual Volume : 1 Virtual Disk Group ?  If so, then it seems that Tiering is not recommended.  Or is the emphasis on creating a single Virtual Volume for each pool.

I am not actually sure how much of a benefit an Archive tier would be with VSphere.  An actual example given in the guide was of a single RAID6 Tier plus a single SSD for read cache.

Thanks,

Gordon

MSA 1050 #restoredefaults on running MSA - will it only reset the passwords?

Hi all,

As per the title, if we carry out the restoredefaults process provided by HP (contractor lost MSA manager password) will this affect the volumes, pools, iscsi targets etc that we have on the array?

Needless to say, I am a little hesitant to proceed

Thanks,

Shaune

DL 380 gen9, H241, MSA2050 no SAS connected volumes

Hi,

I'm trying to get a SAS connection to an MSA2050/2052 working with a H241 HBA card in a DL 380 Gen9 running Windows Server 2019. According to https://h20272.www2.hpe.com/SPOCK/Content/ExportPDFView.aspx?Id=116024&typeId=2 the solution is supported. The MSA firware has been upgraded to VL270P003-001 (latest). The HBA is tried with firmware 6.88/driver 100.20.0.64(B) and firmware 7.00/driver 106.26.0.64. Windows doesn't recognise any volumes on the MSA storage. What solutions are available to make this work?

Many thanks in advance.
