set up new MSA 2040

Appears the best way to set up our new MSA 2040 is with virtual disks.

I can set up one virtual pool, split it to 2 vdisks, each of which has one LUN??

Then when we want to add more storage disks we add the disks to the virtual pool and then we either increase the vdisk sizes or make a new vdisk??

Right now we have all SAS disks in it and if we put more nearline/slower disks to be the archive tier, do the additional disks become part of the current virtual pool?? part of a new pool?? or do we just add the newer disks to the vdisks??

Thank you, Tom

P.S. The manual would be a LOT better if it had examples. And I've been trying for several days to log into HP support so I can ask support but the site never responds, therefore I can't log in...

Windows 2012 Install on MSA2040 SAN

Hi All

Situation: Trying to install Windows Server 2012 R2 with OS on the MSA2040 SAN through iSCSI

Problem: Windows Server 2012 R2 installation cannot see my LUN.

Environment:

Server: HPDL360 Gen9 with HPE FlexFabric 534FLR-SFP+
Switch: HP 5700
SAN: MSA 2040

From the switch, I can successfully ping the SAN. I cannot ping the server, even though the BIOS is configured for static IPv4 during pre-boot. .

On the server, I have slipstreamed the HPE FF534 Drivers to the USB installation media (Used Rufus install to allow the NTFS on UEFI).

I have had some iSCSI errors on the server bios when using IPv4 only, but with IPv6 on, the errors are gone.

I have my Initiator configured and mapped to the Target Volume on the SAN, no errors on the SAN.

Have I missed any pertinent details that might help?

Thanks

repurposing old MSA P2000 SAN...how??

We're replacing our MSA P2000 SAN (with P2000 disk shelf attached).

It used to be vSphere storage.

What's the best way to repurpose/re-use it as additional secondary storage??

It's presently an iSCSI SAN, where can I find out how I might be able to re-use it or do something else with it to make this particular storage available for say, storing archived backups??

We also have a retired DL360 G7 that could be connected to this SAN if that would help make this idea possible, but I don't know what parts must be added to the G7 to make it work with the P2000 to better expose the P2000 storage...to Veeam hopefully for backup copy jobs.

The G7 can be set up with whatever OS necessary, plenty of CPU and RAM.

Thank you, Tom

Replacing drives with cloned drives in AJ800A

$

If I replace the 12 drives currently in an AJ800A with the clones of those drives (byte for byte copies of the drives restored out to new drives of identical make and model) and restart the AJ800A, will it recognize that these are not the original drives and try to rebuild itself or will it allow me to see the original data?  If it can tell that the cloned drives are not the original drives, is there some way to make it believe that they are identical and that they should be treated as if they were the original drives?  Thanks in advance for any help and insight.

MSA2040 Storage Tiering - possible to create multiple pools?

$

Hi,
We have a MSA02040 running with spinning disks, and I am interested in buying the Automated Storage Tiering license and a few SSD's to beef it up a bit. Currently I have 2 (linear) vdisks on their own set of disks. This is on purpose; I want that data to be seperated for both performance and disaster(recovery) reasons. I know the approach of tiering is conceptual different from linear vdisks but still I want to keep my data seperated in two seperate group of disks.

Now when I read the sparse documentation available on Automated Storage Tiering, it seems you have to create a tiering group and add disk-groups in that. Pretty obvious. However what I am not able to find proper documentation on is if I can create multiple tier groups, each with their own performance (SSD) tier / diskgroup and have the automated storage tiering keep data inside each tier, so if one tier goes bad for whatever reason the other keeps running? Is it even possible at all to have tiering working on multiple tiering groups?

P2000 G3 MSA

Hi

I have a P2000 G3, One disk drive fails and we replace it, the storage recognizes the disk as a VDISK SP, I expected that the MSA will automatically re-join the disk as an active member of the RAID if this is how it was originally configured, but it didn't happen and the disk stays as spare of the vdisk. How can I re-joing the disk to the raid?

Thanks,

Carolina

P2000 G3 iSCSI Warning: HOST_CHANNEL_ERROR

$

Hello,

About a day ago our G3 Iscsi sent me a : P2000 G3 iSCSI Warning: HOST_CHANNEL_ERROR
I've been trying to find any info on the net ever since but so far I haven't been lucky enough to find something meaningful. The system logs contain no more messages of this  type and everything seems to get back to normal.
Nevertheless, I'd like to get some info on this warning so as to not to miss the bigger problems afterwards,

I've alreardy googled the warning by its event id, code, event name and found no matching or even close to it entries.

Here is the contents of the warning:

P2000 G3 iSCSI Warning: HOST_CHANNEL_ERROR

Event:

Detected host port error (Port: 1, Error code: 0x1000000)

 EVENT ID:#A6713

EVENT CODE:117

Difference between "Mixed Use-3" and "Mixed Use-2" SATA SSD's

$

Hello all, I am just looking into finally moving from mechanical drives to SSD but I am a little bit confused about HP's wording on SSD's

The following two disks are exactly the same price but the "mixed use" working is different.

816965-B21  HP 120GB 6G SATA Mixed Use-3 SFF 2.5-in SC 3yr Wty Solid State Drive
804613-B21  HP 200GB 6G SATA Mixed Use-2 SFF 2.5-in SC 3yr Wty Solid State Drive

I can get an extra 80gb for the same price as the 120gb "Mixed Use-3" but I don't understand what i am losing by doing so? ( I can see the IOPS are lower, is it that simple?)

I have tried to find info on what HP's "Mixed Use-<Number>" numbers mean but I have not been very successful.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

MSA 1040: How to discover WWN initiator[ New ]

Good Morning,

I'm Braziliam and my english is very bad, any form I will try explain my quest.

This is may scenary:

I have a MSA 1040 Storage, 1 volume with 1TB created and need presend this volume to server.

The server have two HBA controllers.

First I create two iniciators, one for each ports of HBA:

Discovery

After that, I map (Volumes > Action > Map Volume) the volume for WWN's above, see below:

Mapped

Even mapped, I can not see the volume on the server.

My suspicionisthat it isnot showing upbecauseeven though IpresentedtheWWN,thestoragecould notdiscover it, as shown inthe firstpicture.

How to solve this problem? I'm doing the right way?

connect MDS 600 to A HP MSA 2000 via SAS

Hi Hope someone can help.

We currently have a HP Dothill Storageworks SAS which i think has a MSA2012FC controller. We also have a MSA2000 SAS expansion array connected via the SAS port. We were looking to get a MDS 600 and hoping to swap out the MSA2000 SAS array. the MSA2000 uses the SAS SFF-8470 connector, while the MDS 600 uses the SFF-8088.

If I was to use a SFF-8088 to a SFF-8470 cable will my current controller be able to see the MDS 600 as an additional enclosure?

Essentially i'm looking for high density storage to be added to my current SAS controller.

Your advice on this would be much appreciated?

HP MSA SAN issue

Hi

We have a MSA2000  controllers model 2012fc G1 Modular Smart Array with additional 12 bay enclosures.

We have 14 disks and 2 spares.

Dirung the night we had a disk failure and the spare kicked in as expected but during the vdisk reconstruct a 2nd disk failed, causing the reconstruct to fail and the VDISK to go offline.

What do I need to do to get the vdisk back online and not lose any data?

Thanks
