LUN addresses range

New to the management of a SAN, I have a two P2000 G3 configured as a single entity.  When I mapped a volume to a host, I discovered that some LUN IDs were not working.  Actually, the mapping went ok but I got problem when I tried to have this volumne discovred by Xenserver.  Xenserver replied by saying: "No LUNs were found."  In this case I used a LUN ID of 601.  I manage to have Xenserver discover this volume with a LUN ID of 51.

How to does the LUN ID works? Is there a defined range of ID that can be assigned?  Do someone would have  a pointer to a resource I could read to learn more about it?

Thanks,

MSA 2040 SAN Storage connection

hello , Hi everyone.

Thanks in advance for your answers , i appreciate it.

Please allow me to ask about connecting a SAN solution (HPE MSA 2040) to the Dell Poweredge R730 Servers.
I'm about to Direct connect the SAN solution to my Dell servers with the qlogic QLE2562 HBA adapter (no san switches). and i have some questions before i go through the steps.

1-Please can you Guide me and explain what exact steps that i should go throgh in order , such as installing the HBA cards in the server expantion slots , if any configuriation required in System BIOS / Lifecycle controller / iDrac ?!!

2-what should i do to install the OS to the SAN and boot from the SAN Solution (Changing the boot mode from RAID to HBA) ?

3-i will install the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.3 OS to the SAN, does i will need a driver for the HBA Card to be installed in the OS ?!!!

4-in case i have a RAID array that servers boot from before i connecting the SAN , how i should configure The OS to be connected to the SAN and Read it's Luns? does i will use an initiator like the ISCSI Initiator or what makes the OS Deal with the SAN then ?!!!

Many Thanks again.

MSA2040 changing disk position

Hello!

We're running an MSA2040 SAN/FC with tiering license and SSDs as cache.

We will add more SSDs to the system and since only local storage can run on SAS12G, I want to move some of the HDDs to the, already attached and partly equiped, D2600 case.

Is it possible to shut the system fully down (power off) and just relocate the HDDs, plug the new SSDs in, power it up and everything is fine or will it break my RAID?

(2nd step would be to remove the SSD tier/group, remove the vdisk, create a new one including new SSDs and readd it as SSD tier the pool again)

HI ,

Just wated to check something before I proceed.

I have had a drive fail in my MSA, I have a drive ready to replace it with, is it best practice to replace and let it rebuild out of hours, or can I replace it during work hours?.

I wasnt sure if the rebuild process would affect the performance of the unit in any way.

MSA 2040 Error: The MC is not ready. Wait a few seconds then retry the request

Hey all,

We're running an MSA 2040 (stock firmware) dual controller.

Previously, I've been able to log into the SMU on both controllers.

Now, however, the B controller's SMU is down, and it doesn't even respond to pings.

The A controller's SMU gives me a login page, but won't let me log in ("Initializing, please wait...", "Warning
The system is currently unavailable").

I can ping and SSH into the first controller, but almost all commands that I run on MC A, return, for example:

Management Controller is getting data from the Storage Controller. Please wait...
Management Controller is getting data from the Storage Controller. Please wait...
Management Controller is getting data from the Storage Controller. Please wait...
Management Controller is getting data from the Storage Controller. Please wait...
Management Controller is getting data from the Storage Controller. Please wait...
Management Controller is getting data from the Storage Controller. Please wait...
Error: The MC is not ready. Wait a few seconds then retry the request. (2017-12-06 09:14:17)

A notable exception is `restart mc a`, which succeeds, except afterwards I still can't log into the A controller's SMU.

`restart mc b` returns:

Error: There was a failure to communicate with the remote MC ; MC restart failed. (2017-12-06 09:31:51)

Our storage IS working though, just both management consoles are having problems.

This situation is very similiar to this issue, though in that case his storage was inoperative, where here it's working.

His solution was to literally unplug the MSA, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in.  He then promptly updated the firmware and apparently the MSA never failed in this way again.

However, I want to avoid power cycling the MSA if possible, especially because, although we have backups of all of its contents, this is the lone storage array for the office, and if it loses data, it will be very bad.

Any thoughts how I might get the management controllers back?  I promise I'll update firmware after that.

MSA2042 does Virtual Volume size affect performance?

Hi,

I have MSA2042 with 4 extra msa2040 (total place for 60 3,5 inch hard drives). We are running Windows  2016 fileserver. We created Virtual Volume size bigger than we have storage. We made it 100TB on PoolB (virtual disk group 36TB).We do not know how fast data usage will grow. I wonder if it will affect array and Windows server performance if we create Virtyal Volume 300TB in case we will have much more data?

Any help and tips are appreciated.

msa 1050 connection with DL360p

Hello,

I have a HP Proliant DL360p Gen8 and I want to buy a msa 1050 to store my virtual machines and in the future buy a second server for backup. The problem is the connection between them. I would to use a DAC sfp+ cable, to have a 10Gb bandwidth. I have read msa 1050 specs in HP site and I have seen that there are a lot of possible configurations for Server to SAN connection. All the seller I use to search a HP SAN are not so clear in the specs, and since I am not so skilled in this type of connection I need some explanation. Every SAN that in the specifications reports that have 8gb FC ports, are using a FC tranceiver in a sfp+ port? If isn't specified rj45 ethernet I will find a sfp+ port? How I can be sure that the msa configuration I will buy will have sfp+ port?

For the server I will buy a HP 530FLR-SFP+ card. Am I wrong or this card will let me to establish a 10gbe connection with a DAC sfp+ cable?

Regards and Thanks.

Hi Folks,

I have an MSA 2040 to which i cannot login to at all.

The Web Gui will not load (page not found)

Telnet/SSH/Console direct will get me to a login prompt.  When I enter a valid username/password I get the following error:

mccli: error while loading shared libraries: /app/lib/libFWnet.so: cannot read file data: Input/output error

I tried an incvalid username/password and it returns an expected username/password is incorrect.  So I know the credentials i have are good.  What can I do to regain access?

MSA2040 SSDs that are FDE capable

We purchased an MSA2040 with 21 1.2TB 10K SAS drives and 3 SSD drives and the auto tiering license. We also require self encrypting drives. Our SAS drives are FDE-capable but the SSDs are not, therefore we cannot secure the system. Is there a FDE capable SSD drive available for the MSA2040 ?

MSA P2000 iSCSI volume is not initialized (not in the VMWare, not in Windows)

Good day!

I have a MSA P2000 FC/iSCSI.

I created a vdisk and volume and try to connect it to VMware ESXi. The ESXi host sees this volume But when I try to create a datastore on it, I get an error:

"Failed to create vmfs datastore - cannot change the host configuration."

I tried to do this operation with different vdisks and volumes, the result is the same - an error.

Then I tried to add a volume on iSCSI in a machine with Windows. The volume appeared in Disk ManagementBut when I try to initialize it everything hangs and I get an input-output error.

How to Reset Lost Passwords on HP MSA2000 Storage?

I tried to use the username admin password !admin and username manage password !manage since they are default account on the storage but it didn't work .

Connect the supplied serial cable to the serial port on the top controller Controller A using a suitable serial terminal emulation package and set the communications properties to 115200 , 8 , n , 1 , and no flow control  same requires the password and I can't enter the command "set password manage"

how can I do that?

MSA 2040 expansion Virtual Pool

$

Hi.

I've got a MSA 2040 with 24 disks, and Virtual Pools: A, B

In Virtual Pool A, I've got 8 disks in one Raid10 Diskgroup, and one virtual volume.

In Virtual Pool B, I've got two Virtual Diskgropus in Raid 5. (7 disks + 9 disks), and One Virtual Volume.

There is also two disks as global spares.

We need more space now, and a new large separate volume mapped to another server.

The data from volume in Pool A, has been moved to the volume in Pool B for the moment, so Volume A can be cleared..

I've also got a new diskshelf available now with 10 more disks.

My first thought was to set up these 10 disks in one Raid6 diskgroup, and add this to Pool A.

But I've read It is not best practice to mix different Raid diskgroups in the same Virtual Pool?

Should I rather, delete the Raid 10 Diskgroup, and use these 8 disks in a new Raid6 diskgroup?Theat will give me thow Raid6 diskgroups in the same pool. 8 disks + 10 disk.

Would the Raid10 diskgroup together with the Raid6 diskgroup in Pool A increase the Write speed compared to two Raid6 diskgroups?

The MSA is used in a two node Hyper-V Cluster, with some virtual servers:

(RDS, SQL, Exchange, FILE, Print)

MSA 2040 expansion

Hi.

I've got a MSA 2040 with 24 disks, and two virtual Pools: A, B

Pool A consists of one Virtual Diskgroup with 8 disk in Raid 10, and one virtual Volume.

Pool B consists of two virtual diskgroups in Raid 5. (7 disks + 9 disks.) in one Virtual Volume.

And the last two disks in global Spare

We need more space and a new volume, and I I'v got a new diskshelf with 10 disks available.
All the data has been moved to the Volume in PoolB, so this Diskgroup in Pool A can be deleted and recreated if reasonable.

Since PoolA consists of a Raid10 diskgroup with 8 disks. Is it ok to create a new Raid 6 diskgroup with 10 new disks, and add it to the same pool, or should I Create two Raid 6 diskgroups instead?:

(Delete the Raid10 diskgroup, and create two Raid 6 diskgroups:

8 disks in Raid6 + 10 disk in Raid 6)

This MSA is used in a two node Hyper-V Cluster..

HP P2000 G3 MSA, can't login and reset

$

Hi,

We received a HP P2000 G3 MSA with a BK829A controller, which seems, can't be reset. We have had them before and then it was no problem at all, but if you can't login, you can't reset the system.
We tried the following solutions:

- On the CLI interface / console: the hidden accounts and passwords.
- On the CLI interface / console: the login using the S/N.
- CMOS battery removal for a day

Non of these solutions have payed off, it just keeps saying login incorrect.

I quess a second controller might do the job (while running the second controller, putting the first one in so that one get's the settings from controller two). Searching for a controller, but haven't found one yet.

Does anyone have an other clue or solution?
Thanks in advance!
